The Pop Art movement aimed to blur the boundaries between “high” art and “low” culture.
If we were to truly follow the pop art movement, we would be drawing pictures of what we see in today’s advertisements or people in the media, however, we are taking a spin off of that to just drawing animals in what I call “poppy” colors. So if you are looking for a true pop art lesson, this isn’t it. With that being said, let’s make some POPPY ART! Did I just coin a new phrase?!
Fine tip markers
Ruler
Small circle template
Find an outlined image of an animal on the internet. You can also draw your own if you’d like.
Cut it out, making sure to leave the black outline. If you accidentally cut off more than you intended to, just fill the line back in. Then glue it firmly onto a contrasting paper.
Using your ruler, draw 4 somewhat vertical and 4 somewhat horizontal lines across the paper using your marker.
Using your small circle template, fill in the spaces you divided with your lines with circles.
Using your ruler, fill in the leftover spaces, which should be about 50% of your paper with horizontal and vertical lines.
Choose your first color and pick out some sections to fill in.
Using your second color, continue step 6.
Make sure your colors are well spaced out.
Try coloring in different directions to create more textures.
Make sure to choose the brightest ‘poppiest’ colors you can!
Selectively choose some white spaces to leave uncolored.
Sit back and admire your work!
